Where should I buy health insurance?

What’s open enrollment? How does it work?

The Open Enrollment Period only happens once per year and is your yearly opportunity to sign up for a new plan or change your existing health insurance coverage. This year the Open Enrollment Period runs from November 1st 2021 to January 15th 2022.

What is the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare)?

The Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, created some big changes in health insurance. These changes are designed to give consumers increased protection and guaranteed minimum coverage for essential care. Plans that meet the criteria outlined by the ACA are known as Affordable Care Act compliant. All Obamacare approved plans provide coverage for:

1. Outpatient care
2. Emergency room care
3. Hospital inpatient care
4. Pre and post-natal care
5. Mental health and substance abuse treatment
6. Prescription drugs
7. Lab tests
8. Preventative services
9. Pediatric services
10. Rehabilitory services after an accident or due to a chronic illness or disability.

Am I required to have health insurance? What happens if I don’t have it?

Health insurance not only protects you from large medical bills but also gives you access to a network of medical professionals in your area helping you find the best care possible. Additionally, the Affordable Care Act mandates that you must have health insurance. If you do not have health insurance, you may have to pay a tax penalty. Although some people may be exempt from this fine, the vast majority of people without health insurance will be subject to the penalty.

What are the different types of Obamacare plans?

Obamacare plans come in five different coverage levels, known as metal plans:

BRONZE plans: Pays around 60% of healthcare costs

SILVER plans: Pays around 70% of healthcare costs

GOLD plans: Pays around 80% of healthcare costs

PLATINUM plans: Pays around 90% of healthcare costs

CATASTROPHIC plans: offer the lowest level of coverage and are only available to people under 30 and those with a hardship exemption.

Do I qualify for a subsidy or savings on healthcare coverage?

Your savings depend on your expected income for 2016.
